Question: of all the communications you’ve seen, which are the few you’ve found most interesting?
I imagine your answer would be the communications that had some/all of the following:
- Resonance – there was something about the content, delivery, vibe, etc. that really resonated with you. It mattered
- Relevant – it was relevant to your situation. You never thought ‘why are you telling me this?’
- Interactive – you joined in. You didn’t just watch someone talk at you
- Learning – you discovered something new and valuable
- Good start – the first impression was brilliant. It engaged you instantly
- Clear action – it was crystal clear what you had to do after hearing it
- Varied – there was variety in it. In content, delivery, tone, body language, voice, visuals etc. It wasn’t just lots of the same stuff
- Good visuals – if there were accompanying visuals (slides, etc.), they enhanced the message. They didn’t dilute it
- Humour – you laughed during it
- Memorable – there was something about it which still resonates with you now
- Passion – you could feel the passion from the communicator. There was a clear love for the topic… a clear love for you
Did it contain some/all of these?
I imagine so.
Because interesting communications contain interesting things.
Like humour, passion, interactivity, etc.
So, here’s today’s Tip: for you to become even more interesting, include even more of these interesting things in your communications.
Which is, of course, obvious.
But most people don’t do this, do they? We’ve all been to presentations that lacked humour, passion, interactivity, relevance, fun… basically, any reason whatsoever to keep listening.
So, a simple request this week:
Be more interesting!
You – and the people you’re speaking with – will enjoy it much more.
Action Point
Identify simple changes you can make, to be even more interesting. The above list is a good start. For example:
- To be more interactive, ask more questions
- To make sure you’re relevant, ask what people want you to talk about
- To add more humour, go to your search engine, type in your topic and the word “funny”, and see what suggestions it makes!
