Leadership communication – the three things to master

29th October 2019

Three things all leaders should do:

  • Role model – display the behaviours you tell your team to display
  • Proactively lead – be clear where you’re going, and what you want your team to do, to get you there
  • Instantly react – if someone doesn’t behave the way you want, step in immediately. Remember: when you ignore bad behaviour, you endorse it

So, here’s a little Leadership Exercise for a Tuesday Morning…

Give yourself a mark out of 10, for how well you do each of these.

         Done that?

Now give yourself a mark out of 10 for how good you COULD (should?) be, if you worked on a few things.

         Done that?

Great.

And my final question: what simple actions could you take, to get closer to your ideal score?

For example, if you want to be better at “instantly reacting”, you could identify the 1-2 people who display behaviours you don’t like, and diarise time to speak with them about it.

Or, for each member of your team, you could identify 1-2 things you’d like them each to do differently, and then raise these in your next 121s.
It’s easy to get better with things like this.

The only thing you have to do? More than nothing.

Action Point

You know your answer to my third question above? Just do that!
