Simplify your value-add

19th November 2024

What’s the most valuable thing you provide for others?

For example, do you help them have any/all of:

  • More success
  • Faster success
  • More enjoyment
  • Time savings
  • Less stress
  • Increased income
  • Lower costs
  • More clarity
  • More motivation
  • Reduced risk
  • Etc etc

You help people in lots of ways, yes?

But, it’s then important to simplify this list in your mind. That way, it’s easy to remember – even when you’re stressed during scary meetings with scary people.

For example, my three most important value-adds all begin in S:

  • Success – I help my clients have more success when they communicate, sell, lead etc
  • Speed – they get this success more quickly than they would have done
  • Smiling – they enjoy it more. Conversations are better. More fun. They work

Knowing this simplified value-add has lots of benefits:

  • Confidence – it’s nice to see how valuable you are!
  • Value-focus – all conversations focus on the other person and the value you can give them (it’s much better to talk about them and their future, rather than banging on about us and our past!)
  • Thoroughness – it’s easy for conversations to go down one route, and ignore others. Knowing all your value-adds ensures we widen the conversation. For example…
  • … Questioning – if the conversation has focussed on one of the Ss – say, Success – I can ask questions to open-up the conversation. “And do you achieve what you want as quickly as you’d like to?” (Speed) “Do you enjoy it?” (Smiling)
  • Self-development – once you know your value-adds, you can invest time and resource in getting better at adding that value. Read books. Attend trainings. Find a coach. Grab a mentor. Invest time each week on improving your skills. Seek feedback etc etc

We are all such valuable, useful people.

But it’s easy to forget the value that we add.

So, the better we are at (1) seeing our value, and (2) remembering it…  the more valuable others think we are.

So, my question to you again:

What’s the most valuable thing you provide for others?

Action Point

  1. List all your areas of value-add
  2. Simplify your list, so it’s easy to remember
  3. Invest time becoming even better at all these value-adds
  4. Ensure you use these value-adds in as many interactions as possible
