When you make a presentation, the only aim of Slide #1 is that they want to see Slide #2.
But most Slide #1s aren’t engaging – so don’t achieve this. We’ve all seen presentations called “Q3 Review”, “Update”, “Credentials Presentation”, or – my absolute favourite – “Excel Intermediate”.
None of these are interesting.
Which means the presenter has wasted the prime real estate of their first impression – Slide #1.
A simple way to transform this is through the secret power of subtitles.
By this, I mean that you add a subtitle, explaining to the audience the benefit to them of seeing your presentation.
So, under “Q3 Overview”, you could add a subtitle saying “Our best successes, learnings… and our priorities for Q4”.
Now, your audience wants to see Slide #2 – because it looks like it will be useful to them.
Similarly, with the dreaded “Excel Intermediate” (both these words look so boring! I’m about to learn about spreadsheets – but only to a middling level).
But you could add a subheading called “How to save two hours every week” – instantly, it looks more interesting.
And if you can make Excel Intermediate sound interesting, this must be a great technique.
Action Point
For your next presentation, make sure your Slide #1 shows the audience why they’ll want to hear you.
Adding a benefits-rich subtitle is a great way to do this.
